Map showing the location of Benhall Social Club

The Benhall & Sternfield Ex-Servicemen's Club (a.k.a. Benhall Social Club) has plenty of space available for parking and boasts excellent facilities, including a bar where visitors can expect a friendly welcome!

When and where do we meet?

The Saxmundham & District Chess Club meets weekly in the evening. Currently the club meets on Tuesdays between 7:30pm and 11:00pm, at the Benhall & Sternfield Ex-Servicemen's Club (just outside Saxmundham).

The club and its activities

Founded over 50 years ago the club has a long and happy history in Saxmundham, residing at many venues in and around the town over the years. Despite our relatively small size, we compete successfully in the Suffolk Chess League and other competitions.

In addition to League and other matches, the club also runs internal competitions for members and, from time to time, has arranged special events such as evening quickplay tournaments and a simultaneous display. On many occasions members have been able to enjoy social events too, such as the Christmas Dinner!

The club caters for serious and casual players alike, providing opportunities for those who wish to play competitively and for those who simply enjoy playing chess! Anyone wishing to learn how to play, or keen to improve their chess will find the club offers excellent prospects to do both.

Whilst we don't currently have a dedicated ‘junior’ section, younger players are nonetheless welcome and we would encourage parents to come and visit us with their interested children on a club night.

Our membership fees are comparable with those of many other local chess clubs. Adult membership currently stands at £30 annually, which includes membership of the excellent Benhall & Sternfield Ex-Servicemen's Club too! For younger players, junior membership is available at only  £5.
(Please note: membership fees are reviewed annually and may differ from those stated above).

We would be pleased to welcome new members of any playing strength and would encourage anyone who is interested in chess to come along and visit us.
